A. Introduction of NGO
1. What is “Cancer Research Malaysia”? (Brief Description)
An organization that vows to research
cancer among Asians and provide better care and longer lives for those
affected. The organization is based in Subang Jaya and is Malaysia’s primary
cancer research intritution.
2. When was CRMY founded? What funded It
initially?
In the year 2000 with government research
grants, investments and support from many parties and partners.
3. Who are the founder(s)?
Cancer Research Malaysia was founded in 2000, by Tunku Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad bin Tunku Yahaya. with Professor Datin Paduka Dr. Teo Soo Hwang, who also served as the a founding Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer.
1. What is the CRMY’s journey, since its
founding?
Since CRMY’s 25 year journey, the
foundation has since spread awareness through organized events such as
marathons or even golf games. And since has achieved milestones including
cancer alliances with Sabah and Sarawak, CRISPR research, diagnosed several
genetic related cancers and won some international awards.
It costs almost 7 million (RM) average a month to run the institution. And thanks to its many supports and millions of ringgit worth of donations, cancer research Malaysia's running costs may be fulfilled. Donations has been increasing annually, based on data.
3. What is the current biggest achievement so far, since its founding?
The understanding that cancer isn't isolated in the same organ but rather, can be tracked using "biomarkers". And at the current moment, CRMY has developed 2 distinct biomarkers that could be used to choose treatments.
1. What are the core causes of the founder, to form CRMY?
To save Malaysian lives, spread awareness of cancers especially those common among Asians, and of course, Reversing Cancer altogether.
2. What is origin of the logo? Why?
The logo is selected because cancer is known as the big “C”, hence the “big c” to spread cancer awareness and through the work they do, they hope that they can reverse cancer.
1. What are CRMY’s visions and missions?
Advancing research in neglected areas,
developing more ways to improve survival rates such as diagnosis and
treatments, developing cures more affordable by everyone, spreading cancer
awareness and finally, putting Malaysia on the global cancer research map. As
their slogan goes, “A future free of the fear of cancer”
2. What are the current hopes/goals that
CRMY hopes to see in the months ahead?
Harness technology to enable early detection of cancers, be it through the use of mobile phone apps or other technology to detect the cancers early or to enable individuals to know what screening is appropriate for them.
3. Which Sustainable Development Goal
(SDG) does CRMY represent?
CRMY's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) includes health, well-being, and reducing inequalities. CRMY's efforts contribute to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by advancing cancer research, improving survival rates, and developing affordable treatments.
4. Is CRMY a eco friendly institution?
Why?
CRMY follows the green health policies in Malaysia. Which is to ensure research
is conducted with environmental responsibility and all operations are operated
at minimum carbon footprint.
5. Are employee ethics in CRMY upheld?
How are employee livelihoods’ standards maintained?
CRMY’s employees are held to upmost standard. Employees have are given many benefits from welfare, care as well as organised get together events.
D. SWOT Analysis
1. What are the current advantages,
that CRMY has in hand?
CRMY is currently the only government
funded and authorised cancer research foundation in Malaysia. It has an expert
board of researchers and scientists, and have done remarkable things such as
CRISPR research, won international awards and even had scientists honoured at
World Immunotherapy Congress- Asia.
2. What are the current challenges of
the organization?
Awareness is too low, and common cancers
such as breast cancer is not being treated seriously enough. Only 10% of
Malaysian women actually go for screening. As such, CRMY is trying to get these
numbers to around 80 or 90.
3. What are the possible events that
could result in a breakthrough of progress?
As mentioned previously, as soon as they get almost every Malaysian aware and
to go for cancer screens, they will begin to understand faster and more
efficiently, as well as save more Malaysian lives.
4. What could possibly threaten the
organisation’s existence? Why?
The stop in the flow of funds or government
support. Without the support of the public, they will no longer be able to run
as a functioning institution altogether.
1. In what way does the organization
raise awareness about themselves?
Organized events, feasts, and campaigns. These events are usually hosted with some sort of slogan and color theme, that helps participants catch on and pay attention.
2. What are most successful events held
by CRMY, so far?
3. How much planning goes into these
events? Why?
Much meticulous planning goes into managing
these events. Most notable due to tight funds and adherence to company
standards, organizers must anticipate participation count, impact, budget and
factors regarding weather as well as logistical issues.
4. What does it take to become a partner of CRMY?
Pledging allows one to contribute funds that will significantly help the institution.
Doing this will make one part of a large community who wishes to combat cancer
together.
5. How many partners does CRMY have? Who
are they?
At the moment, CRMY is cooperating with
government institutions. Most notably Sime Darby, Khind Starfish, PWC, Ong Hin
Tiang and Ong Sek Pek Foundation, and Petronas.

Individual Reflection
Doing the research for CRMY has proven a personal challenge for me. CRMY is unresponsive through email and as such, all data collected are based solely on sources available to me on the wider internet. Even such, much information is seemingly obscured to me and the primary source of information available is through their website as well as social media, which CRMY seems to be active in.
Through all this, I still thoroughly believe that CRMY is an important institution in this country and it aims to assist the Malaysian population and by a wider extent, the asian population from contracting hereditory cancers. CRMY is deservant of all the support it can get.
