Agenda:

      Egg Drop Challenge

  • Game Plan : Our group has agreed to create the prototype using readily available materials such as popsicle sticks, rubber bands, sponges, food containers, and paper. We will also apply relevant physics concepts to enhance the efficiency and sturdiness of our design. We will also conduct a trial run beforehand to ensure that the egg remains unbroken during the official testing on Monday (14 July 2025).

Individual Report:

Sylvia Wong

Concept Mind Map Progress :

The concept mind map began with the central theme of “BeanKind,” inspired by the film Ratatouille, which celebrates how even the smallest, most overlooked ingredients can create something extraordinary. The idea developed around using mung and red beans which is simple, local and nutritious foods often seen as humble or discarded, to symbolize transformation and kindness. The mind map explored connections to The Lost Food Project’s (TLFP) mission of food rescue and sustainability, with branches on inspiration, reasons for choosing the concept, its social and environmental impact, and how it raises awareness for TLFP’s work.

Product Mind Map Progress :

Two products were developed from the concept, BeanKind Brew (mung, red bean drink) and BeanCycle Bites (snacks made from leftover bean pulp). Each product mind map included key elements such as product type, target audience, price range, unique selling point (USP) and their relationship to the overall concept.

Challenges Encountered & Solutions :

One major challenge was finding a way to connect fun, attractive food products with the deeper message of food waste and social responsibility. It was also difficult to ensure that both the drink and snack used rescued ingredients in a realistic and appealing way. Therefore, the solution was to combine creativity which merging storytelling with actual food rescue practices. In addition, choosing product names that was meaningful and related to TLFP. I am choosing names like “BeanKind Brew” and “BeanCycle Bites” were selected to reflect the values.

Concept Mind Map Progress :

My concept is “Kindness Delivery”, which was inspired by the movie “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and the mission of The Lost Food Project (TLFP). The idea is to deliver small acts of kindness through food that is thoughtful, handmade, and sustainable.
To develop the concept, I created a mindmap that connects the themes of kindness, comfort, and food rescue. I am currently searching for more references and research articles to help expand and support my concept with stronger background information.

Product Mind Map Progress :

So far, I have designed two products based on my concept. The first is a soft oat cookie called Kiki’s Crumb, that is made with rescued oats and nuts. The second is a citrus-based purple sparkling drink,  Rebloom, which uses rescued fruits and butterfly pea flower.
I developed both mindmaps to include key aspects such as product name, type, price range, target audience, and how the product relates to the concept. I changed the product names to better align with the overall theme. I’m also working on product sketches and searching for references for the mind maps.

Challenges Encountered & Solutions :

One challenge I faced was how to make the drink visually stand out while keeping it healthy and meaningful. I wanted the colour to reflect the concept of magic and kindness, so I aimed for a purple drink. However, I didn’t want to use artificial coloring.
To solve this, I researched natural coloring options and discovered butterfly pea flower, which turns purple when mixed with citrus. It will be a perfect solution because it is affordable, natural, and also creates a magical “colour-changing” effect that fits my concept beautifully.

Concept Mind Map Progress :

Since Ratatouille, a 2007 film, is strongly influenced by French culture and cuisine, I was inspired to create the concept name "La Cuisine Sauvée." I chose to develop this concept because it closely aligns with the mission of The Lost Food Project (TLFP), which focuses on rescuing surplus, edible food that would otherwise be wasted and redistributing it to those in need. Similarly, La Cuisine Sauvée embodies the idea of giving "second chances" to imperfect or overlooked ingredients by transforming them into creative, gourmet-style products instead of discarding them. As a result, the mind map I am currently building explores various key elements, including the sources of inspiration, the reasons behind the concept, the development of the logo, and how this concept helps to raise awareness about TLFP.

Product Mind Map Progress :

I came up with two products that align with my concept, which is Petite Croque and Fruité Luxe. Petite Croque essentially refers to the bite-sized French toast, whereas Fruité Luxe is a fruit parfait served in cups. In addition to taking inspiration from Ratatouille, I used French names to give the products a unique and sophisticated touch. Moreover, the mind map I created outlines key components like the product names, types, price ranges, unique selling points, target audiences, their connection to the overall concept, and other relevant details.

Challenges Encountered & Solutions :

At first, it was quite difficult to come up with ideas and produce visually appealing and innovative products. Due to our limited amount of budget, I have to ensure that those products are both nutritious and reasonably priced. I therefore handled this by creating my product using inexpensive, basic, and surplus ingredients, such as breads that are nearly expired but still in good shape and surplus fruits sold in the market, which at the same time keeping it visually appealing and attractive to customers.

Concept Mind Map Progress :

For my concept, I chose Mushishi as my main inspiration, a Japanese manga and anime series by Yuki Urushibara. My approach focuses on how Mushishi explores nature, folklore, and the unseen forces that connect everything. What stood out to me most is how the series tells quiet but meaningful stories about the balance between humans and nature, and how even small, invisible things like mushi can have a huge impact. This reminded me of the consumeristic nature of people today, and how food is often neglected or wasted instead of being treated as a source of life. That connection made me want to build a concept that, like Mushishi, encourages people to pay attention to the things we usually overlook and give them a second chance. It ties in closely with the mission of The Lost Food Project, which rescues surplus food and gives it a new purpose by distributing it to those in need.

Product Mind Map Progress :

For my final products, I decided to go with a cookie and a drink, both inspired by Mushishi and its themes of nature, transformation, and the hidden beauty in everyday things. The first item is called Kouki Cookie, named after a glowing essence produced by rare mushi that symbolizes healing and renewal. It’s a soft, chewy cookie made from upcycled ingredients like overripe bananas, stale oats, or even leftover coffee grounds, simple things that would usually be thrown away, but can become something special with the right care. The second item is Uro Uro Tea, a calming herbal iced tea inspired by the wandering mushi, made from rescued herbs and citrus peels. Lightly sweetened with syrup from preserved fruits, it’s refreshing, earthy, and gentle. In the mind map, I explored how both products use accessible ingredients while staying true to Mushishi’s calming, reflective tone and how they support The Lost Food Project’s mission of reducing food waste by giving ingredients a second chance at life. After creating the product concept, I began creating the key components like the product names, types, price ranges, unique selling points, target audiences, their connection to the overall concept, and other relevant details within the mind map.

Challenges Encountered & Solutions :

One of the main challenges I faced was trying to develop a concept that felt both creatively meaningful and aligned with the values of The Lost Food Project. I went through several ideas at the start, but many of them felt surface-level or disconnected from the deeper message I wanted to convey. I didn’t just want to create a product for the sake of it, I wanted the concept to carry weight and reflect the importance of reducing food waste in a thoughtful way. Finding a theme that spoke to me was more difficult than I expected. What eventually helped was revisiting media that genuinely resonated with me. That’s when I thought about Mushishi, a series I’ve always admired for how it highlights the beauty in quiet, overlooked things. Drawing that connection between the invisible impact of mushi and the often unnoticed value of surplus food gave my concept a new sense of purpose.

Concept Mind Map Progress :

The concept I have chosen will be "BuzzBites" ,which was inspired by the Bee Movie that was released by DreamWorks Animation in 2007. In the Bee Movie, it is shown that when the bees stop pollinating , plants stop growing food and it disrupts the ecosystem completely. The Lost Food Project (TLFP) combats against food waste in the society, which if not hindered also manages to damage the environment severely through overfilled landfills and wasted resources and also just like the movie , it shows us that even a small action such as bees pollinating can affect the entire ecosystem , The Lost Food Project reminds us that saving one meal from being wasted can help feed someone and also overtime help save the environment. I have incorporated these aspects into my mind map , as well how it helps the environment into the mind map.

Product Mind Map Progress :

The two products I have chosen are Barry's Berry and Chocolate Colony. The first product , Barry's Berry is a dessert which consists of layers of vanilla cream cheese and biscuits that has been dipped in coffee or milk and topped with a layer of strawberry cream cheese icing. On the other hand , Chocolate Colony is also another dessert that creatively uses leftover rice, which is dried and pan puffed. The puffed rice coated in decadent and rich melted dark chocolate and heavy cream. I have included the product name , type price range and as well as the product's USP in the mind map. I am currently researching for the product's relation to the concept.

Challenges Encountered & Solutions :

Choosing a concept that would fit the goal of our NGO was slightly tough but I did research extensively and found out that the Bee Movie would suit my concept the best. Next , the price range of ingredients were not fixed online, most of the ingredients would seem to be very highly priced online so I had to visit a local supermarket in person to ensure that I have the cheapest price point for costs to set a price range to ensure the profit earned would be sufficient and that the price range would not be too expensive for our target audience which is UOW students & staff.

Concept Mind Map Progress :

The concept in which I have chosen is "Rot in Peace" (RIP). The concept itself is based off food wastage reduction efforts evident in Mainland China. The campaign, which is conducted city-wide, is an excellent way to remind people not to waste food, as food wastage is a very big problem in modern China. So far, efforts have been proven fruitful, which leads to me taking inspiration from it. The methodology is to constantly put up "eye catching" adverts everywhere to garner attention, and for those who had already seen it to be reminded to do so.

At the current stage of my mind map, all sectors are completed including the booth concept, the design/moodboard, as well as the layout are all in place. All references and hyperlinks are also included in the mind map proper, which lead to efforts done in China and in result, here in Malaysia as part of promoting the Lost Food Project.

Product Mind Map Progress :

Both products are currently thought of, with the main goal being "eye catching" and embedded in daily life as much as possible to remind people to not overconsume. The first product, whom which I named the Eggchains, is an accessory primarily targeted at those who use bags. This item resembles a "mimic" in the form of an egg in fantasy, where the metaphor here is that uneaten food will retaliate as "monsters". It is not meant to scare anyone, but rather as something interesting to think about and in which would serve it's purpose as a kind of reminder for those who have it and those who notice it on someone else. Besides, it is also cute enough to be worn on a daily basis while not seeming like a walking advert. The second item is simply, shaker fries. Finger food is truly unwastable. Why? Because it's delicious and very sharable. It truly speaks on a level where finishing your food gives a sense of completion.

Challenges Encountered & Solutions :

After trials and tribulations, I decided on a concept that I have simply experienced myself and resonated with, as in my time in mainland China. In the end made me backtrack to memories that I never knew, and to see concepts like these in a newer light.
